Faux Appliqué is not appliqué at all, yet it may be used to replace appliqué needleturn, shadow trapunto, fused appliqué and even pieced appliqué.
Imagine appliqué projects with no appliqué pieces at all! Sounds unlikely? Go back to your childhood and get out those colouring pencils - yes, appliqué by colouring in! Helen Stubbings has developed a method she calls "Colourqué" (pronounced "kulla-kay") using coloured pencils and uses it in her book Faux Appliqué.
The design is applied to the fabric and you simply colour it in to give an appliqué effect or appearance. You can outline stitch around each segment if you wish. The work needs to be set with a Textile Medium so as the colours won’t run when you wash it.
Derwent Artists Pencils and the new Derwent Coloursoft Pencils are highly recommended by Helen though most colouring pencils may be used.
Judy's Note: I just absolutely LOVE this method and know that you will too. Can see my granddaughters getting involved with this technique. Am so proud to be personally associated with Helen. |
