Punch with Judy :: Free Projects

Free Projects

Over time we'll be building up a library of great projects.

New

Living Post Cards

Misty Fuse™ sent me a brochure using their new Ultra-Violet Misty Fuse™ and Angelina® Fiber together which was very exciting and got our creative juices nourished. Liz, my talented friend, who now travels with me on the Show Circuit, has made some amazing Post Cards using both products together. It is such a shame that the beauty of the real things is not displayed as well in print for they are truly amazing. I hope you enjoy making some yourself as I’m sure you will be inspired by this FREE PROJECT called Living Post Cards.

Please Note: This free project is a PDF document. If Adobe Acrobat Reader is installed on your computer it will open automatically in a new window, but it may take a few moments to download.

Previous Projects

Puff Quilting Chair Cushion

Way back in a year too long ago to remember, I introduced Biscuit Puff Quilting to my students in my shop and I still enjoy the cuddly feel of those little quilts. Clover have recently introduced a new way of making Puff Quilts but with some truly interesting variations that I’m sure you’ll find fascinating too. The Puff Cushion shown here is using their method of regular Puff Quilting using their new Puff Quilting Clip Set. Have fun and enjoy the luxurious feel of a padded chair seat. Pattern by courtesy of Clover Needlecraft Inc. Japan

Please Note: This free project is a PDF document. If Adobe Acrobat Reader is installed on your computer it will open automatically in a new window, but it may take a few moments to download.

Chinese Lantern Quilt Pattern

Since the Olympic Games are being held in China this month, I thought this design would be appropriate timing for you to try our Foldy Stuff Patterns. Foldy Stuff is the ideal way to try something old with a new twist and is so easy to sew that a real beginner sewer achieves perfection right from the start. I love the folds in the fabric simply because it is different and is three-dimensional. Do try any of the Foldy Stuff Patterns, you’ll love them.
For this project you will need Foldy Stuff Courthouse Steps Pleated Quilt Pattern.
With kind permission from Donna Poster, Foldy Stuff Patterns.
Embroidered CD Case

Fan Shaped Silverware Holder.

Pom Pom Scarves
Remember how we used to make Pom Pons with cardboard circles and using up all the left over scraps of wool for multi-coloured pom pons? It’s now a whole lot fun all over again with Clover’s new Pom Pom Makers, available in two sizes, easy enough for the kids to use too. Here’s a great project to put all those pom pons to good use with a fun scarf. Sporting enthusiasts may even like to make one in their club colours for attending games cheering madly! Note: Originally and correctly called a Pom Pon, according to good English Dictionaries, but now commonly called a Pom Pom.
Circle Dance Quilt
Circles are "IN" for all quilters, so why not make the Circle Dance Quilt using the EZ Easy Circle Cut ruler
Bow Brooch
Bead Knitting has been popular for sometime now but many may not have ventured into trying this delightful way of Knit One, Purl One as yet. So, to encourage you, I have written a quick and easy beginner's type pattern for a little Bow Brooch that can be made very quickly and very economically in comparison to larger Bead Knitting projects. The little Bow Brooches make wonderful gifts for Christmas too, so you have time now to start click-clacking! I've also added an alternate method of making it into a tiny pendant to hang around your neck. Of course, it goes without reminding you that the Bow Brooch is purely Ornamental rather than Functionable. Enjoy making many!
Plaited Christmas Wreath
The Crowning Touch company who are the manufacturers of the famous Fasturn® Turning Tools have kindly offered you a quick last minute Christmas Wreath to make. Using their unique way of “stuffing tubes of fabric”, I am sure you will learn from these instructions for all manner of other applications too, eg. comfortable-to-hold bag handles.
Circle Cutter Table Runner
Our new FREE PROJECT is such a fun thing to make and although it is a Table Runner, the method could very well be used as a bag or a cushion. Elaine Braun from Polar Notions has kindly given us permission to share her wonderful Circle Cutter Table Runner using the Circle Cutter & Circle Cutter Design Mat that she has designed.
Please Note: This free project is a PDF document. If Adobe Acrobat Reader is installed on your computer it will open automatically in a new window, but it may take a few moments to download.
Sew Sweet Satchel Project
Joan Hawley from Lazy Girl Designs has kindly given permission to use her project for a cute little bag that would make an ideal "Dongle Bag" for you machine embroiderers! Of course, it can also be used for lots of other little tidbits. Thank you Joan for allowing us to use your design.
Quiltsmart Lone Star Christmas Tree Skirt
Quiltsmart ALWAYS makes things quick and easy, hence their motto "Quilt Smarter, Not Harder". That is certainly the case when it comes to Diamonds. Of course, you could choose to use any size Diamond Template you already have to make this delightful Christmas Tree Skirt, but with Christmas Day countdown well into swing, time is running out. With Quiltsmart's Printed Fusible Interfacing method, using their Lone Star Quick Kit package, we have shown here how to convert it quickly and simply into a wonderful Christmas Tree Skirt that you may use year after year.
Choose traditional Christmas Colours and cherish an Heirloom in the Making!
No time before Christmas? This would make a beautiful Table Cover too! Sew it as a project for the holidays after Christmas using any range of colours to suit your décor.
The Answer to the "Storm at Sea" Question
"Storm at Sea" has always been a favourite of mine. I ADORE geometric rather than floral shapes at any time. Marti Michell, one of the most knowledgeable people in the quilting business, has kindly given permission to reproduce her method of this fabulous design.
You can download the full-size template patterns or use the "From Marti Michell" templates mentioned.
We thank Marti for her generosity in allowing us to share her ideas.
Slash Quilt (Chenille) Bag
As a result of having the chenille cushions/Christmas story on the Hints & Tips page, I have had so many asking for the "how to do?" and "what's chenille?" that I looked for a simple practical project other than a cushion. So, in response to your requests, Clover Needlecraft have generously given permission to allow me to use their very useful little bag pattern.

Use it as a Quilting/Sewing Accessories bag to take to classes or perhaps for your jewellry or costmetics when travelling. Did you know the Clover Slash Cutter used in this project and the Curved Slash Cutter also now have guides available separately in 6mm or 10mm widths so as may be interchanged? Means if you purchase either, then by adding some guides only, you have the benefits of both units without the expense of purchasing both. Thank you Clover!

Bachelor Buttons Quilt
EZ Quilting Company has a marvellous range of quilting rulers and templates that save time and allows you to achieve perfect quilting. We have also added some tutorials for each of their rulers to help explain their use and to demonstrate the versatile range they offer. I have chosen the "Bachelor Buttons Quilt" by Darlene Zimmerman for you as our latest Free Project because I found the way Darlene makes the scalloped edge of the quilt so simple and accurate.

Most would never attempt other than straight bias bound edges to any quilt, but with the help of the new "Easy Scallop Tool" even this daunting task is "easy-peasy". Even if you don't want to make the quilt, please read her method and maybe apply it to some other project you may make in the future.

Pam Bono Designs - Cattleya Orchid Quilt
Pam Bono uses The Angler2 for all her quilts and simplifies quilts by using strips of fabric cut into either squares or rectangles, then sews two pieces together diagonally, thus making triangles and other shapes. That's all. Anyone can do it. View her other quilt patterns and be amazed how Baltimore Quilts can be made from strips of fabric. Enjoy trying her easy quick piecing methods without any templates with this delightful project she has so kindly provided for us - Cattleya Orchid.

Quiltsmart "Double Wedding Ring" Cushion
Quiltsmart's motto is "Quilt Smarter, Not Harder" and that certainly is true with their Printed Fusible Interfacing.
To get you started with Quiltsmart's fabulous technique, they have kindly given us permission to use one of their Cushion Projects as this month's Free Project.

Some may call it "cheating", some may call it "applique" - but whatever superlatives you offer as you sew with Quiltsmart, you will find everything matches up like never before with so little effort.

Never tried patchwork before? Here is the perfect reason to get hooked.

Quiltsmart "Rob Pete" Cushion
With kind permission from Quiltsmart.

Ghee's Mini-Bag
With kind permission from Linda McGhee of Ghee's USA

Let your imagination create one of the handiest little bags that was originally designed as an Eyeglass Case, but because so many people have forwarded their interpretation of how they made it, Linda has renamed it a "Mini-Bag".
You may use embroidery, patchwork, creative overlocking or simply make it in quilted fabric. I made one a long time ago featuring a beautiful IgolochkoyTM Punchneedle Design. Share with us your interpretation and forward me a photo of your finished "Mini-Bag".

Floral Cushion using Easy Triangles™
Rosalind Veness of Ros Designs has kindly offered her Floral Cushion design using her Half Square Triangles for this month's Free Project. The Floral Cushion using Easy Triangles is easy to make with her papers and will be a delightful part of your own home décor - made by you!
Bead Knitted Tassel and Crochet Tassel
These beautiful beaded tassels can be used to embellish a zipper on a jacket or sweater,
or as a special added extra on any of the Swallow Hill Beaded Bags.
Scrappy Lazy Star Table Runner
Use the Lazy Angle Ruler and "Lazy and Lovin' It" from Lazy Girl Designs to create this delightful table runner.
Puff Necklace
You can whip up this lovely necklace in no time using the fabulous FASTURN™ turning tools with your favourite fabric.
Pretty Pillow
This cozy pillow couldn't be softer! Eskimo fleece makes the difference. The embroidery gives the pillow its very own charm. The embroidery is easy using your machine's embroidery capabilities.
