Cut & Sew
For each
block, cut a 21” square of your background fabric and an 18” square of
the appliqué fabric.
If you are
making Plumeria, cut a 6” x 21” piece of a third fabric for the
flowers.

Rough cut the
interfacing to trim away the instructions and headings. Take care not to cut inside the
dashed lines close to the appliqué design.
Tip: Don’t throw away the portion of the
interfacing where the quilting pattern is illustrated. You may need it in step 9.
Place the rough
(fusible) side of interfacing on the right side of the appliqué fabric.
Pin in place. For Plumeria, place the flower
interfacing on the flower fabric.
Important: Do not iron yet.
|

|
|
|
3.
|
Stitch on the
solid lines. 15 stitches
to the inch.
|

|
|
4.
|
Trim & Turn
Trim on dashed
lines. For turning, cut a
short slit through the interfacing only.
Tip: At each tight inner curve, snip
the interfacing and fabric to the stitching line. This will make it easier to get
a good turn at these points.
|

|
|
|
5.
|
Turn right
side out. Take care to avoid
stretching or tearing the interfacing.
|

|
Tip: Try a surgeon’s hemostat. Insert it through the slit
deeply into your piece, pinch onto cotton fabric (not interfacing)
and pull through the opening.
|
Use a blunt tool such as a large
knitting needle or a screwdriver to gently ease out points and curves.
|

|
|
|
6.
|
Flatten edges
by finger pressing.
Tip: Roll the cotton
fabric to the back (just a bit!) so interfacing won’t peek out.
|

|

|

Fuse &
Stitch
Center the
appliqué on a 21” square of background fabric. Set a steam iron to cottons and
fuse by pressing to a count of 10.
Let cool before moving.

Tips: Fold and press diagonal creases
in the background block first. These will help position your piece.
If you wish to reposition a piece after ironing, re-heat with the
iron and peel up quickly. Position
and fuse again.

Sew the appliqué
to background using a narrow zigzag, decorative stitch, or hand stitch.
§
For
a hidden stitch, we recommend using invisible thread for the top thread.
Adjust your machine for the narrowest zigzag that you can accurately
control so the needle goes into the appliqué on the zig and into the background
on the zag.
§
You
may hand appliqué if you wish.
§
To
add emphasis, use a contrasting thread and a decorative stitch such as
a blanket stitch.

For Plumeria,
repeat steps 7 and 8 to fuse and stitch the flowers. Embroider as shown. Plumeria have soft yellow centers.

|
|
|
| 9. |
Sew your blocks
together in rows and columns using a ¼” seam allowance. Add borders. Quilt and bind
as you desire. A suggested
quilting pattern is illustrated on the interfacing.
