Russian Punchneedle Embroidery


Miniature Punchneedle Embroidery is done with a special hollow needle to make a plush pile design. The pile may be deepened, clipped or sculpted for a velvet texture.

Punchneedle Embroidery works up quickly, requires no knotting, is durable and machine washable. As there are four different sized needles, most threads and fabrics are able to be used.

Punchneedle Embroidery stitches, unlike traditional embroidery, are worked on the back side of the fabric, which is very tightly stretched in a hoop.  With every stitch "punched" through the fabric, a loop of thread is formed, thus producing the unique, raised plush design on the underside (which is actually the front).  Since Punchneedle is worked on woven fabrics (knits need to be adhered to a woven fabric), match the weave of the fabric to the needle - the tighter the weave, the smaller the needle and vice-versa.

RUSSIAN PUNCHNEEDLE EMBROIDERY is truly easy - there's only ONE stitch to learn. I don't know of another method of embroidery which offers so much variety with only ONE stitch.
