Pleachét by Laura Jane
Laura Jane presents Pleachét with the RugBee RugNeedle – early 1900’s fibre art of Heirloom Rugs.
Laura says: “Carrying on a family tradition created by my Grandmother ‘Laura Elizabeth Johnston’ and introduced to the craft world by my sister ‘Shirley Ann Wood’ I am proud to continue their legacy of teaching this hands-on approach of creating heirloom rugs from recycled fabric. It is now my life’s work in this new era of ‘makers’.
Our Grandmother, ‘Laura Elizabeth Johnston’, may not have coined the phrase, “Necessity is the Mother of Invention”, but she certainly exemplified that analogy when she developed what is now known as the Pleachet process of Rug Making. She used it to carpet her farmhouse in the early 1900’s before the advent of wall-to-wall carpeting. She went on to display her beautiful rugs and technique at fairs across the country. She taught my sister and my sister taught me.
