Binding a Scalloped Project Without Mitering Tutorial

Using the Scallop Radial Rule

Cut the binding no wider than 2-1/4" wide on the bias. For the binding length, add 1" for each scallop on the quilt. For example if the quilt measures 50" all the way around and has 20 scallops all around, you need a binding that is 70" long. You will have some left over but it is better than not having enough. Once cut to length, fold in half. Mark the scallop lines on the quilt and do not trim.

The marked scalloped lines on the quilt are the guide line to place your folded bias binding. Start the binding on one of the corners where the scallop is at its widest and stitch a quarter inch seam allowance. When you come to the inside curve, where two scallops meet, needle down, pivot and make sure the binding is smooth as you start up the next scallop. Stitch all around. Now you can trim leaving the quarter inch seam allowance. Clip into the deep curves without cutting the thread in the seam.

Turn the binding to the back, again starting on the corner and stitch down. Be sure the binding fabric just barely covers the seam. Do not stretch or pull over the seam. When you come to that inside curve, pull the quilt straight across, turn the binding over. Take two little stitches at the "V" point making sure that as you continue stitching up the scallops, to push the binding up so it just covers the seam allowance.
