PERSONAL

The Christmas Angels were certainly smiling on our daughter Sharelle's family on Thursday this week.

I mention this because many of you know they live at Gerogery where 4 houses and many properties were lost in the bushfires on Thursday.  Both parents are school teachers and were at work on a pupil-free day (end of school year), hence Nicholas 14 and Jasmine 11 were home, Reece was at his part-time job.  Bushfires started and Nick couldn't get through to 000 nor texting his Mum.  The wind changed and the bushfires were upon them within minutes.  Both were very brave though petrified.  They'd been taught fire drill and acted courageously.  Jasmine tied the horses up close to the house whilst Nick did other safety precautions.  A neighbour told them to huddle with their two dogs under a shed next door and stay low.  It got unbearably hot so they left and returned home whereby they hosed what they could as well as the neighbour's house, put buckets of water on several fires that broke out in their carport and surrounds until a family friend and the Fire Brigade arrived.  (Parents were unable to get through due to the road blocks.)  The house was saved, though full of soot and smoke, but all fences and trees were lost.  Fortunately, no stock hurt though neighbours lost some. This photo is similar to what Nick said they saw approaching them - he said they really thought they were going to die.  We are all so proud of them and thankful that they only have minor burns.
