Hi Everyone & HAPPY AUSTRALIA DAY to you!

Fly the Flag

I attended the local AUSTRALIA DAY celebrations this morning held at The Rock as part of the Lockhart Shire Council's aim of sharing this day at a different township within the Shire each year.  See my Blog for some photos   Sarah Mycroft

The Ambassadorial Address was given by Miss Sarah Mycroft, a local Mum who became the first woman to run around Australia in 2010.  I'm glad she included Tassie, travelling over in the boat.  At all times she had a team of 3 with her, one mainly to care for her two under-five children.  I just wish I had've taken a notepad and pen because her address was so very inspirational.  The 15,000 klm journey saw her run out 15 pairs of shoes, running 60 to 70 klms per day for 238 days from April to November.

She does have a website but it doesn't give the stories and facts that she told today.  Sarah said that had heaps of support from Aussies on her epic long-distance run and she raised $20,000.00 for her cause - The Mindd Foundation  She called her run "one lap - no excuses" and it was this theme she spoke about today.

We then had the nominees for the Citizen of the Year and it reminded me that this is what Australia Day is all about.  Yes, we celebrate Australia, our Country, our Nation and one website I visited said "Australia Day commemorates the establishment of the first settlement at Port Jackson, now part of Sydney, in 1788.  It is an opportunity for Australians to come together to celebrate their country and culture.  There are reflections on the achievements of the nation and explorations of ways to make the country even better in the future."

Whilst this is true, of course, it is the everyday local citizens giving their time freely for community work, sporting positions, caring for the aged, meals on wheels, hospital visiting and all the numerous charities.  When the Master of Ceremonies read out this morning the list of accomplishments by the four nominees, one of whom was only 15, it drove home that these are the people who contribute most to making Australia the best country in the world in which to live!

HAPPY AUSTRALIA DAY - hope you enjoyed it!

Your friend,

Craft and Sewing Shows in March

The show season is about to commence for 2012 and in March there are two shows we are attending.  Sydney's Rosehill Racecourse from 8th - 11th March and Brisbane's Exhibition Centre from 22nd - 25th March.  There is also one in Auckland NZ at the ASB Showgrounds from 15th to 18th March, but we are not attending. Kiwis, you have two shows this year, this one and one at Hamilton in September.

There will be a new magazine called "Make" in which you will find all the details about the Craft and Sewing Show in your State.  You should visit and request a copy.

I will be part of a new segment at these shows during 2012 entitled "Restyle Studio" in which myself and two other presenters will offer you sewing ideas to restyle your wardrobe with easy sewing techniques.  We hope to inspire young people to take up sewing and also to encourage beginner sewers to try some new techniques.  I have two segments as follows: "Create this season's trends with last season's wardrobe using some simple sewing "pick-me-ups" and "Stand out from the crowd!  Personalize your ready-to-wear clothing with simple embellishments changing those garments for today's fashion".

I will also have a Daily Seminar on Bag-Making Know-How at 12 noon for Sydney Show but Brisbane isn't confirmed as yet. I have so many hints and tips for making bags using some of our new products I can show you some shortcuts and "must-dos" as well.  I'll also give you some ideas how to make your old jeans into bags and how to personalize your own bag patterns.

SEE YOU ALL AT THE SHOW and remember, i f you would like any order brought to the Sydney show, please let me know before Friday 24th February much earlier than normal please note. Saves you postage on mail orders and saves you time at the Show.  You may wish for your January Birthday Sale orders to be brought to the Show as well.

Don't forget your Show Coupons too. Print them and collect your discounted products or receive your FREEBIES. No coupon, No Offer.  Note:  These are still to be changed for 2012, visit just before the show to print new offers.

Machine Embroidery Retreat has a change of date and we have restructured it for 2012.  Please note it will now be held from 7th to 9th July and will be with emphasis on Quilting with Machine Embroidery doing a large proportion of the embroidery in the hoop.  Lots of added surprised too.  ALL NEW!  I expect we'll have many past students wishing to return so may I suggest you consider this Retreat earlier rather than later.

Expressions of interest are requested for a NEW Retreat to be held from 14th to 16th September with Guest Tutor Leonie West from Westalee Design Rulers.  This will cover not only the basics of using the Westalee System but also include all the NEW templates and rulers that have been released and more to be introduced in the following months.  Should be a very comprehensive Patchwork Retreat suitable for both beginners and the more accomplished as we will cater for all levels of experience.

View full particulars on our Retreats section.

What a success these were in 2011.  So much so that we are repeating the Westalee Mystery Sampler Quilt Class commencing on 1st February, 2012.  Enrol now!  Another Westalee Class, exclusive to Punch with Judy will commence on 15th February, 2012 entitled Westalee Constellation Quilt.  This will also include the new Double Wedding Ring and Dresden Plate templates from Westalee Design which are different to any other similar designs from other companies as well as using some of the Constellation Series Stashbuster range.  Very exciting!

The Curve Master Course commences again on 1st May and enrollments are already quite strong.

Once again I will repeat the Punchneedle Online Class for 2012 commencing 1st April and also the Pleat Maker Online Class commencing 15th May, 2012.

WEBINARS!  What is a Webinar you may ask?  Read all about it here.   Just give me time to get all the classes going and the January Birthday Sale over and then we'll commence the Webinars.

There are new products having been added since Christmas so please visit What's New?

Marti Michell has some new products and I'm sure her Patch Tumbler will be a popular addition.  New bag patterns seem to be a regular addition and they certainly are by far the best sellers in patterns these days.  How many have you made?

I'm sure you'll appreciate using Quilt Layout Markers if you lose track of which patchwork block or row goes where!  These will help you assemble your quilt the way you intended it to be without the unnecessary "reverse stitching".

This week I shall add a new range of Patchwork Rulers from EZ Quilting.

Kay Hanley from 1-2-3 Embroidery  has added two new Machine Embroidery CDs to her range. Zoo Friends is an amazing set of 13 applique designs using Texture Magic.  These will delight any youngster because the texture is so appealing to the touch. My Little Tool Box is a brilliant conception and Kay keeps coming up with ideas to delight the littlies.

Jenny Haskins Designs has several new Machine Embroidery CDs for you to choose from so much so that you won't be able to resist more than one.  Jenny's new book "A Place In The Sun" includes a CD and I'm sure will be a best-seller.

Westalee introduced their Adjustable Dresden Plate Template - Ruler and it will be used in our new Constellation Quilt Online Class for Westalee.

Sewline have introduced a new generation fabric marking system the Duo Marker and Eraser using their breakthrough technology Sewline Ink.  A perfect pair, "made for each other" and you will appreciate their qualities too.

The Sewing Revolution have introduced another new ruler their Create-A-Trim Square plus some new patterns.  Always something creative to help you with accuracy and a different appearance.

Both Embellish Magazine and Down Under Textiles Magazine have new issues available.

What a month this has been!  You have certainly enjoyed all the frivolity of our Daily Specials to help celebrate our Website's 11th Birthday.  Every day a new super duper special. Everyone who places an order for each of our Day's Specials goes into the Lucky Draw for fabulous prizes.  Check it all out here.  When January finishes I will need to ask you to be patient whilst we endeavour to mail all the orders after we collate the whole month of specials.  Some of the comments have been priceless. One lady thanked me "for giving her a reason to get up at 7.30am each morning"!

Allow me a little humour - I just LOVE Maxine Cartoons.

I have more about the Australia Day morning at The Rock on my blog.

While visiting my blog, why not subscribe to it so as you may be informed when there's a new blog posted?

I've recently added several new tutorials and this is a great way for you to learn more about products. You should check this section regularly as it's always being updated.

You will find more tips in my column Nifty Notions in the e-Newsletter Into Craft from the show organizers Expertise Events.  Visit and subscribe to receive same.  There's a new one due this week and my column is about taking up hems, school uniform hems in particular, since school goes back this week now that summer holidays are over.  More time for sewing Mums!

Did you know that we have updated our Home Page and Shop Page of our website?  Did you notice the change?  Tell me what you think and if you find any aspects of the website that you think I should pay attention to. .

Did you know that when you are learning to free-motion quilt, it is a good idea to use a larger needle such as a  Schmetz Quilting or Microtex #90 or #100 as the larger size, being stronger, doesn't bend as easily?  This means that it is less likely to hit the Bobbin Case or other parts when moving the fabric too fast relative to the machine speed.  As you practice and your rhythm improves you may reduce the size of the needle to be used.

Did you know that some quilting/marking pencils last longer if you sharpen them with an eyebrow pencil sharpener?  Often gives a shorter, fatter point which doesn't break under pressure.

The June Tailor dressmaking products are extremely popular with any serious home seamstress and her Tailor Board & Pad Set would have to be the most requested.  It has five different balanced positions and twelve differently shaped pressing surfaces.

Till next time,
